ZiboCastor No.8

 ZiboCastor No.8 is a middle-maturing hybrid variety bred by Zibo Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It was certified by the Crop Variety Approval Committee of Yili, Xinjiang province in Dec. 2007.
1. Yield: Ordinarily its yield is 4500kg/ha. Its yield can be above 6000kg/ha by high-yield cultivation. The potential yield of one plant is 1000g. It was tested and demonstrated in different places of many provinces such as Shandong, Xinjiang, Neimeng, Henan, Hebei, Hubei, Ningxia, etc., the results indicated that it has a wide adaptability and an outstanding potential of increasing production.
2. Characteristics: For ZiboCastor No.8, it takes 100 days from seedlings emergence to the main fruit ears becoming ripe. The plant is 210 cm high. The diameter of stem is about 2.94cm. Most stems are purplish red. The main stem has 7-10 joints and there are some wax powders on it. The fruit ears look like pagodas. Density of the capsules is moderate. The capsules are green and indehiscent and have lots of thorns. Fruit ears on the main stem are 55-67cm long and average number of capsule is 92. It has 4-5 first branches, average length of fruit ears is 63.2cm and average number of capsule is 78. Average length of fruit ears on the second branches is 47.6cm and average number of capsule is 54. The seed is elliptical and there are some brown stripes on its coat. The weight of 100 seeds is about 36g. Kernal rate (kernals /seeds ×100%) is 75.81%. The seed oil content is 51.06% and kernal oil content is 67.35%. It is able to endure saline-alkali and resist the disease of withering.
3. Key points of cultivation:  In China, it is suitable to be planted in such areas where the frost-free period is above 120 days. It has outstanding performance in the Northeast, the Northwest and North China. Sowing time: In middle regions of Shandong province, the spring sowing time is between the last ten-day period of March and the first ten-day period of April. To interplant in wheat fields, the sowing time is the first ten-day period of May. In the Northeast and Inner Mongolia, the suitable sowing time is the last twenty-day period of April. Cultivation density: In middle regions of Shandong province, the row spacing is 100-120cm, the spacing in the rows is 70-80cm, plants population is 10500-13500/ha. In the Northeast and Inner Mongolia, the row spacing is 100-120cm (sowing seeds on ridge every two ridges is available), the spacing in the rows is 60cm, population of plants is 13500-15000/ha. In such areas where the temperature difference is large and the sunshine is strong, such as Xinjiang Autonomous Region etc., the population of plants can be increased to 13500-18000/ha.
