Brief Introduction of National and local Joint Engineering Research Center for Chemical Utilization of Castor Biomass
National and local Joint Engineering Research Center for Chemical Utilization of Castor Biomass relies on Tianjin Nankai University Castor Engineering Science and Technology Co., Ltd. It is mainly engaged in scientific research in the fields of castor breeding, castor processing technology and castor product development. Among them, the castor breeding was entrusted to Zibo Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Zibo Academy of Agricultural Sciences was established in 1959.There are 75 employees in the academy, including 62 scientific and technological personnel, and 46 professional and technical personnel with high and intermediate technical positions (researchers, senior agronomists, agronomists, etc.), mainly engaged in research and promotion work of cash crops (castor, stevia, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Rosa roxburghii, Gastrodia elata, etc.), food crops and horticultural plants (fruit trees, vegetables, flowers). More than 120 scientific research achievements have been achieved, of which 27 have been awarded at provincial and ministerial levels. Six national patents have been granted, and 17 new crop varieties have been approved by the provincial Crop Variety Examination and Approval Committee.
Zibo Academy of Agricultural Sciences began to study the utilization of castor heterosis in China in 1984. A single parthenogenetic plant of castor was found in 1984, and a series of all-female inbred lines of castor were induced and bred by Agronomic measures. Zibo Academy of Agricultural Sciences has successively bred the first generation of hybrid ricin Zibocastor No. 1-9 using all female lines as female parent, among which 6 hybrids were approved by Provincial Variety Approval Committee and 4 varieties were identified by expert group of National New Variety Appraisal Committee of Castor. According to expert appraisal, the castor breeding project of Zibo Academy of Agricultural Sciences has reached the international leading level in the breeding of castor varieties. ZiboCastor hybrids have been extended to more than 20 provinces, cities and autonomous regions, such as Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Shanxi, Heilongjiang, Hunan, Hubei, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Hebei, Henan and Shandong and more than 10 countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Laos, Thailand, Viet Nam, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Mozambique, Brazil, Paraguay, Columbia and Fiji etc.
